27th Interline Regatta Race Review
Day One: Race from Road Town to Marina Cay
Course takes the fleet in a “W” pattern through Drake Channel from Road Harbor to a mark off Salt Island, to Beef Island, to a mark close to Round Rock and with a finish off of Scrub Island. Winds were 12 – 15 knots E to SE with 50% cloud cover and no rain. After a beat to Salt Island, the next two legs were close hauled with the last leg a run.
Day Two: Two Races
AM: Windward/leeward course with the fleet racing from Scrub Island to a mark outside the Baths to finish off of Scrub Island. Winds were 18 – 20 knots The 443’s were called back at their first start and had to restart as so many of them were over the line before the gun that the race committee was unable to identify each individual offender. A violent squall with driving rain greeted the leaders at the finish line, making things interesting for competitors and committee alike.
PM: Scrub Island to Leverick Bay: via a mark off the Baths, around all the Dogs, through Colquhoun Cut and finish off the mooring field at Saba Rock. Winds were a little lighter and the weather was clear.
Day Three: Lay Day
Day Four: Leverick Bay to Anegada
After one day of lay or play, the fleet was very aggressive at the start. The 51.5’s were especially gung-ho and had to be called back after many of them crossed before their starting gun. The course took the fleet on a short beat in North Sound before reaching and running to the Dogs and close reaching to the Anegada. The fleet made quick work of the race with all competitors finishing in less than 3.5 hours and all within 10 minutes of each other.
Day Five: Anegada to Road Town leaving the Dogs to starboard.
Relatively light air for much of the race with the first eight finishers coming across the line after 4.5 hours of racing and in “slow motion”, taking about 10 minutes to cross the line. The remainder of the fleet, with help from an approaching major squall line, all finish with breeze in the next fifteen minutes. The squall held off until everyone was safely into base.
