25th Annual Moorings Interline Regatta
“Time flies when you’re having fun”. There’s no other way to describe The Mooring annual sailing regatta comprised of airline pilots and crews from around the world. Twenty-five years have flown by since the inaugural Interline Regatta in 1982, yet the event is still packed with the same spirited yet fun competition between airlines as it was in the early years. While the racing has grown more serious and a regatta judge now handles protests between rivals that were once settled over a bottle of rum, the Interline Regatta continues to offer a rowdy good time for competitors and spectators alike.
This year’s ten-day event included five exciting races that took the sailors though the crystal blue waters of the British Virgin Islands in near-perfect conditions. Following the race boats was a flotilla of merrymakers, swaying to the sounds of calypso and streaming the colorful banners of their favorite airline, brewery and distillery. Light breezes on the first day increased steadily during the week, as did the party atmosphere each night after the sailing had finished. Teams from the US, Great Britain, Europe, Scandinavia, and the Emirates jumped up and jiggled at the Jolly Roger, dressed as pirates and invaded Norman Island, danced till the wee hours at the Cane Garden Bay bash, and enjoyed a night of camaraderie and celebration at Marina Cay. Pranks were abundant, tee shirts were swapped, airline flags were pirated, and after the final race, a festive awards banquet culminated with wet and wild take-offs and landings in the Mariner Inn pool.
Flaps up for another great Interline Regatta!
